The Astor Theatre Society Welcomes Lesli Chandler as New Executive Director

The Astor Theatre Society Board of Directors is delighted to announce the appointment of Lesli Chandler as the new Executive Director. Chandler’s return to her hometown and the iconic Astor Theatre marks an exciting chapter for the organization.

Chandler brings a diverse background in the theatre, music, and business administration industries to her role. She has had active experience supporting entrepreneurs, providing valuable administrative support, business development outreach, facilitation, and event planning in the non-profit sector. Notable experiences include her work with CEED-Centre for Entrepreneurship Education and Development and AWENS – Association of Workplace Educators of Nova Scotia.

Reflecting on her connection to the Astor, Chandler shared, “The Astor played a vital role in my development as an artist. It was through my early involvement as a child and young adult that I was inspired by all of the activity at the Astor and this experience shaped the foundation of my career in the Arts. Attending rehearsals with my mother for Winds of Change productions as a child, I eagerly awaited the opportunity to step onto the stage – a dream that became a reality with the WOC production of Oliver.” She worked for LITF Liverpool International Theatre Festival as the Festival Coordinator and represented Liverpool Winds of Change at the Mason, Korea Theatre Festival. Liverpool audiences may recall her successful play, “In Lieu of Flowers,” which drew packed houses at the Astor. Additionally, Chandler has made guest performance appearances at the Astor for fundraising and special events. Her experience in the arts includes performances at renowned venues such as Neptune Theatre, Festival Antigonish, Live Bait Theatre and Grafton Street Dinner Theatre, Feast PEI. Alongside her performing endeavours, Chandler also shares her passion for encouraging and supporting youth through her Local Vocal voice lessons and work with the Prospect Road Community Centre.

Chandler expressed her commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive collaborative arts space, stating, “I am eager to connect with the community and the entire Astor team to continue shining a light on our beautiful and iconic Astor Theatre.”

Board Chairperson John Simmonds welcomed Chandler home to the Astor and expressed excitement about her leadership and expertise. He said, “We look forward to Lesli’s valuable contributions as we move forward as an organization and solidify our position as a vibrant hub of arts and culture on the South Shore.” Chandler will assume her role as full-time Executive Director on July 5, 2023.
